"My work is about presence—about what it means to be seen, to belong, and to exist within moments that are often quiet but deeply felt. I’m drawn to the spaces between gestures, the intimacy of connection, and the stories that unfold without performance. Photography allows me to stay with these moments—to witness them, honor them, and share them with authenticity"

About

Sonya Tanae Fort is an award-winning fine art photographer based in Massachusetts whose work explores lineage, identity, cultural memory, and emotional inheritance.

A self-taught artist, Sonya began as a pencil artist at age nine. During her first visit to a museum, she declared that her work would one day hang in galleries and museums around the world — a childhood vision that has since become reality.

Since launching her fine art photography career in 2018, her work has been featured in over 160 exhibitions across 30 galleries and 6 museums throughout the United States, Canada, England, Greece, Hungary, Italy, and Spain. Her photographs are recognized for their emotional depth, refined composition, and timeless aesthetic.

Working primarily in black and white, Sonya uses light and shadow to reveal emotional truth and quiet strength.

Her portraits often center themes of resilience, generational continuity, femininity, and cultural pride. With deep ties to the Cape Verdean community through lifelong personal, cultural, and spiritual connections, she creates work that honors underrepresented narratives with dignity and intention.

For Sonya, photography is more than image-making — it is memory-keeping. Each photograph becomes a record of presence, a preservation of legacy, and a visual bridge between past and future.
