I SEE YOU PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
I See You is Sonya Tanae Fort’s visual diary and ode to the places and people who have become a core part of her identity. Her subjects form a larger network of connections that transcend people and places. Both documentation and expression, her work captures the depth of feeling she has for her subjects and creates a space that unites themes of love, lineage, heritage, intimacy, community, memories, and self-reflection. Included in the exhibition is a section devoted to Fort’s travels to Cape Verde and the spirit of Morabeza — the uniquely Cape Verdean expression that encompasses a welcoming attitude, warmth, hospitality, community, and connection she has experienced both here and on the islands. Through friendship, family, community, language, and faith, Cape Verdean people and culture have greatly impacted her life. This exhibition is Fort’s thank you and “obrigadu” to the people, places, and values she holds dear.
A Note About Language
The text in this exhibition is presented in English and Cape Verdean Creole, or Kabuverdianu, the native language of Cape Verde. There are variants of Kabuverdianu across the nine inhabited islands of Cape Verde, and while it has been spoken for centuries, reading and writing the language is relatively recent thanks to the collaborative efforts of those who have played a role in advancing and promoting the language. The writing in this exhibition is presented mainly in Santiago variant because that is the one the artist is learning and speaks.
The exhibition is dedicated In Memory of Casper D. Fort, and Pauline Paulina Baptista Delact Evora
